With a hardness of 5 on the Mohs scale, Apatite is relatively soft, about as hard as tooth enamel, which remarkably enough is built from the same mineral. Gentle handling therefore keeps her luster beautiful the longest.

The name Apatite comes from the Greek word apatan, which means to deceive. The German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner gave the stone this name in 1786, because Apatite was so often mistaken for other minerals such as Beryl, Tourmaline and Olivine. A yellow-green variety from Spain was already known in the eighteenth century as Asparagus Stone, because of its fresh asparagus color. Apatite also plays a major role outside the world of jewelry: on the Russian Kola Peninsula the mineral is mined on a large scale as a raw material for phosphate fertilizers, and in our own bodies a related apatite mineral forms the basis of teeth and bones.
