What is Sugilite?

Sugilite is a rare mineral from the cyclosilicate family, the same group that includes Beryl and Tourmaline. Atoms of silicon and oxygen form rings, with potassium, sodium, lithium, iron and manganese held between them. That manganese gives the stone its color, from soft lilac to deep violet and magenta. Sugilite grows in manganese-rich rock and rarely forms neat crystals. You will usually find it as massive, fine-grained material with black veins of manganese oxide. With a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 it is slightly softer than Quartz: sturdy enough for jewelry, but sensitive to scratches.

Meaning and History of Sugilite

The stone is named after the Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi, who found the material in 1944 on the small island of Iwagi. What he found was not violet splendor but plain yellow-brown rock, and only in 1976 was Sugilite officially recognized as a separate mineral. The breakthrough came in 1979, when a large quantity of deep purple material was discovered in the Wessels Mine in the Kalahari in South Africa. Since then the stone has appeared under trade names such as Lavulite, Royal Azel and Wesselite. Sugilite therefore has no centuries-old lore, it is a young stone. That is exactly why its symbolism is so contemporary: staying true to yourself in a world that asks a great deal of you.

Dyed marble is also considerably softer and scratches easily, while Sugilite with its hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 handles that better. Resin composites give themselves away by their lighter weight, their warmer feel in the hand and sometimes by air bubbles. Always ask about the origin as well, because almost all fine purple material comes from the Northern Cape in South Africa. A deeply colored stone at a low price is reason to be critical.
