It forms where lime rich, salty water evaporates slowly, for example in shallow sea basins, lagoons and desert soils. The calcium sulfate left behind crystallizes into clear plates or into fine, parallel fibers that reflect light like silk. Pure Selenite is colorless and so translucent that you can almost read through it. Inclusions of iron or clay give the stone a peach, orange or brownish tint. With a hardness of 2 on the Mohs scale, Selenite is exceptionally soft: you can scratch it with your fingernail.

In 1747 the Swedish mineralogist Johan Gottschalk Wallerius fixed that name for larger, translucent Gypsum crystals. Pliny the Elder wrote that the finest lapis specularis was mined around the city of Segóbriga in Spain, and emperor Tiberius even had greenhouses built from it. In the Middle Ages, clear Gypsum plates protected the statues of Mary in wayside chapels, which is why the name Marienglas is still used.
