When their shells settled into the mud after death, silica rich groundwater seeped through the layer and slowly silicified the entire shell bed. In this way a limy shore bank turned into hard stone. The brown to reddish brown color comes from iron oxides, and the pale spirals are the shells themselves. With a hardness of 6.5 to 7 she is sturdy enough for daily use.
