With a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, Unakite is sturdy enough for daily use, although its granular structure can chip under a hard knock.

The name Unakite refers to the Unaka Mountains on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, where the American geologist Frank Bradley first described the rock in 1874 under the title On unakyte. He collected his samples at locations including Walnut Mountain and Max's Patch in Cocke County, Tennessee. The mountain name itself comes from Cherokee: unega means white, a reference to the white blossoms and the mist that covered the summits in spring. Afterward, Unakite became known above all as a decorative and jewelry stone, because it takes an exceptionally fine polish. In today's crystal literature it symbolizes patient change: something that slowly transforms without losing its original shape.
