What is Zoisite?

Zoisite is a calcium bearing aluminum silicate and belongs to the sorosilicates. For a long time she was counted among the epidote group; today she is regarded as the orthorhombic counterpart of Clinozoisite, a mineral with exactly the same composition but a different crystal structure. The green color comes from small amounts of chromium in the crystal lattice. The black patches and veins you often see in green Zoisite are inclusions of Hornblende. The stone forms in metamorphic rock, where lime rich and aluminum rich material is reshaped under high pressure and temperature. With a hardness of 6 to 7 Zoisite is sturdy enough for jewelry, but she cleaves easily in one direction and therefore handles a sharp knock poorly.

Meaning and History of Zoisite

The name refers to Sigmund Zois, Baron von Edelstein, a Slovenian patron and collector who financed mineral collecting expeditions. In 1797 the mineral dealer Simon Prešern brought him pieces from the Saualpe in Carinthia, and Zois saw right away that this was an unknown mineral. The stone was first called Saualpite, after that locality. In 1805 the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner described the material and named it Zoisite in honor of Zois. His collection of some five thousand minerals is still kept at the Natural History Museum of Slovenia. The stone only became widely known in 1967, when the blue violet variety Tanzanite was found in Tanzania. Today Zoisite symbolizes transformation and the return to yourself.
