What is Actinolite?

Actinolite belongs to the amphiboles, a family of silicate minerals with a characteristic chain structure. Together with Tremolite and Ferro-Actinolite it forms a series in which magnesium and iron gradually replace one another: the more iron, the darker green the colour.

Actinolite forms in metamorphic rock, often around cooled magma intrusions or through the transformation of magnesium-rich limestone. Characteristic are the thin, needle-like crystals that often grow in radiating bundles and sometimes occur as fine inclusions in Rock Crystal, producing a soft cat's eye effect. With a hardness of 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, Actinolite is sturdy enough for jewellery, provided you handle it with the necessary care.
