What is Verdite?

Verdite is not a single mineral but a rock. It consists largely of Fuchsite, the chromium bearing green variety of Muscovite from the mica group. That chromium determines the color: the more chromium sits in the crystal structure, the deeper the green. Verdite also contains small amounts of Quartz, Talc, Chlorite, Albite and sometimes Corundum. The stone formed in ancient mountain belts of southern Africa, where heat, pressure and mineral rich water transformed the original rock and allowed the fine mica flakes to grow. That is what gives Verdite its layered build and soft sheen. With a hardness of 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale, it is soft enough to carve, but also easy to scratch.

The name Verdite goes back to the Latin word viridis, which means green. The material was first described at the North Kaap river in South Africa and later earned the nickname Africa's green gold. In southern Africa, Verdite has been used for fine carving for generations. Sculptors from Zimbabwe created works from it that found their way into European museums, because its even texture allows the stone to be worked with simple tools. It gained standing as a building material as well: tiles and molding of Verdite were exported from South Africa to London and used there in buildings such as the Bank of England and South Africa House. Look at the texture as well. Genuine Verdite shows a layered, faintly silky surface with irregular color variation and sometimes red or yellow flecks, whereas dyed quartzite is evenly colored and reveals dye in small cracks. Verdite also feels slightly greasy and warms up quickly in the hand, while Jade stays cool and glassy. If a green stone is offered as African Jade without any explanation of its origin, that is reason to be critical.
