What is Schalenblende?

Schalenblende is not a single mineral species but a fine grained mixture of sulfides. The leading role belongs to Sphalerite (ZnS), often together with Wurtzite, with bands of Galena (PbS), Pyrite and Marcasite in between. She formed in hydrothermal ore veins, where a sulfide rich, gel like fluid crystallized quickly at low temperature. As a result she did not grow in neat crystals but in concentric, kidney shaped layers that look like the cross section of a shell once she is cut. Cream, honey brown and blackish brown alternate with silver gray and golden metallic shine. With a hardness of 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale Schalenblende is fairly soft, and the lead in her layers makes her far heavier than you expect from her size.

Meaning and History of Schalenblende

The name comes from German and literally means shell ore. Schale refers to the shell or bowl, to the concentric layers that become visible when the stone is cut. Blende was for centuries the miners' name for zinc ore and goes back to the German blenden, to blind or to deceive. The ore looked strikingly like lead ore but yielded no lead, so it was long set aside as worthless. Georgius Agricola recorded the name blende as early as 1546. In 1844 the chemist Carl Kersten described Schalenblende from Raibl in the Alps, and today the finest material comes from the zinc mines and lead mines near Olkusz in southern Poland. That story of a stone first underestimated and later valued still echoes in her symbolism: trusting your own worth and your own judgment.
