Spectrolite is a variety of Labradorite and therefore belongs to the plagioclase series of the feldspar family, with roughly 55 percent anorthite in its composition. The stone forms in slowly cooling igneous rock, where wafer thin growth layers develop inside the crystal. Those layers refract and reflect light, producing the flash known as labradorescence. In ordinary Labradorite that flash is usually limited to blue and green. In Spectrolite it covers nearly the entire visible spectrum, set against a strikingly dark background. With a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale she is reasonably sturdy, although her perfect cleavage asks for care against knocks and falls.
The name Spectrolite is young and thoroughly Finnish. It comes from the Latin spectrum, color spectrum, and the Greek lithos, stone, and was coined by geologist Aarne Laitakari. He described the remarkable material and searched for its source for years, until his son Pekka came across a deposit in 1940 near Ylämaa in southeastern Finland during the construction of the Salpa Line, a defensive line along the eastern border. The fact that a stone full of light was found in the middle of wartime still gives her a symbolic meaning for many people: even in dark periods there is color to be found. After the war, cutting Spectrolite grew into a local craft and in 1973 the first workshop opened in Ylämaa. In the trade, the name is now also used for exceptionally colorful Labradorite from Madagascar.
