Its warm color is caused by tiny traces of iron in the crystal lattice, which form a yellow color center under the influence of natural radiation in the ground. Natural Citrine is fairly rare: much of what you find on the market is heat-treated Amethyst, which turns golden yellow to orange in the process. Like other Quartz varieties, Citrine grows slowly in cavities of rock, where the crystals fill the space over thousands of years into points, clusters and geodes. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, Citrine is a sturdy stone that handles daily use well.
