What is Shungite?

Shungite is not a crystal but a mineraloid: a carbon rich rock without a fixed crystal lattice. It formed roughly two billion years ago from organic material that gathered on the floor of a shallow sea and was later reshaped by pressure, heat and hot fluids into a form of carbon found nowhere else on earth. The carbon content ranges from about 30 to 98 percent; the remainder consists of Quartz, mica and other silicates. The deep black color therefore comes not from a dye or a metal, but from the carbon itself. With a hardness of 3.5 to 4, Shungite is soft: it polishes easily, but it scratches easily too.

Meaning and History of Shungite

The name refers to Shunga, a village on Lake Onega in Karelia, where the black layers reach the surface. Russian geologist Alexander Inostrantsev was the first to describe the material scientifically in the late nineteenth century and gave it its name. Before that, people in the region simply called it aspid stone, meaning slate stone. Around 1600 the best known story took shape: Ksenia Romanova, exiled to Tolvuya, was said to have recovered after drinking the spring water that seeps through those layers, and later became the mother of Mikhail, the first tsar of the Romanov dynasty. More than a century later, Peter the Great had the first Russian spa built at those same springs. From these stories grew the modern symbolism: Shungite stands for cleansing, protection and a firm connection with the earth.
