Sodalite is a mineral from the feldspathoid group, the family that replaces feldspar. It forms in magma that is rich in sodium and poor in silica, which prevents ordinary feldspar from growing. That is why you mainly find Sodalite in nepheline syenite and phonolite. The deep blue color does not come from an inclusion but sits in the crystal structure itself, where chlorine plays a key role. The characteristic white veins usually consist of calcite or nepheline. Sodalite rarely forms visible crystals and almost always occurs in massive form. With a hardness of 5.5 to 6 it is slightly softer than glass and considerably more brittle, so knocks and falls are best avoided.
