Its chemical composition is Be3Al2Si6O18, and the characteristic green color comes from small amounts of chromium and vanadium in the crystal lattice. Emerald grows under special geological conditions, where beryllium-rich fluids come into contact with chromium and vanadium, two elements that rarely meet in nature. That is what makes the stone rare and precious. With a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, Emerald is hard in itself, but the many fine inclusions and hairline fractures also make it fragile and sensitive to knocks. Its color ranges from light grass green to deep emerald green.
